Fall 2025
Recent writing and curatorial projects on concrete poetry, Howard Smith, Lee Miller, and Keith Smith
This summer I finally made it to Rochester—home of Visual Studies Workshop and many book artists! I presented my research into newsletters from book arts organizations from the 1970s-80s at SHARP, which I hope will become (whisper….) my next book project. I also met with several artists there, including Joan Lyons, who is one of the subjects of my recent 10x10 Research Fellowship award for the project: Women’s Radical Self-Publishing of their Bodies, Xerox in the 1960s-1980s: Barbara T. Smith and Joan Lyons. That research will be shared next year in a virtual presentation. I also met with Keith Smith. If you’re in NY, you can catch a solo show of his work I curated with his gallery, Bruce Silverstein, opening on November 6.
In recent writing, I wrote about the latest Granary catalogue, After Words: Visual and Experimental Poetry in Little Magazines and Small Presses Art Books, and collection building and concrete poetry for the Brooklyn Rail. This past spring, I was awarded one of the first Rabkin Travel Grants to support my travel to the Palm Springs Art Museum to review the Howard Smith retrospective for the Brooklyn Rail. I also had the chance to write about the pioneering photographer Lee Miller as the cover piece for Fine Books. There is a solo show of her work currently on view at Tate Britain.
